A mod that claims to survive water, dust and drops makes you want to throw it in the bottom of a rucksack and forget about it. The Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 is sold on exactly that idea, and the reviews published so far discuss it without ever leaving the test bench. A trip tests toughness somewhere else entirely, at an airport security lane, in a car boot in August, in a tent on a cold night. The real question is what the maker’s figures actually cover.

Geekvape Aegis Legend 5, the short answer before you pack

The Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 kit pairs a dual-battery box mod running from 5 to 200 W, rated IP68, with a Z Sub-Ohm tank. On a trip, the mod is the toughest part of the set, backed by water, dust and drop tests that Geekvape has published. The weak points lie elsewhere, in the glass tank, in the two cells you have to carry and in temperature ranges the brand sets out in black and white.

The table below follows the spec sheet Geekvape publishes on its official store.

FeatureValue
Power source2 x external 18650 cells, not included
Output5 to 200 W
Dimensions146 x 56 mm (height and width)
Screen1.08-inch colour TFT
ModesEco, Smart, Normal, Custom, temperature control
ChargingUSB-C port
TankZ Sub-Ohm Tank 2021 or Z Sub-Ohm Tank 5, depending on the version

Geekvape lists the spare glass at 5.5 ml, or 2 ml in its TPD version. UK rules cap refillable tanks at 2 ml, so the TPD version is the one sold in British shops.

What IP68 means on the Aegis Legend 5

The IP68 badge appears on every listing, yet it says little until the maker publishes its test conditions. Geekvape has done so, and the figures show what the mod can really take on the road.

Water and dust, with numbers attached

The international standard IEC 60529, which defines IP ratings, leaves it to the manufacturer to set the depth and duration of the immersion test once the second digit reaches 8. On its store blog, Geekvape gives 1.5 m for 30 minutes for water, and 120 minutes of exposure for dust, citing a test report from the TCT laboratory.

For a traveller, that covers a downpour on a hill walk, a drop into a puddle or a soaked bag on a station platform. The spec sheet says nothing about seawater or chlorinated water, and nothing suggests testing those limits by a hotel pool.

Drops, measured separately

Shock resistance is not part of the IP rating. Geekvape describes it on its own terms, as drops from 1.4 m repeated 25 times, roughly a mod slipping out of a jacket pocket.

Those tests apply to the mod. The tank keeps a glass section, sitting on top of the Aegis Legend 5, so it takes the first hit if the kit lands upside down.

Heat, cold and humidity, the limits Geekvape publishes

This is the figure the reviews of the kit leave out. On the same spec sheet, Geekvape gives an operating temperature of 0 to 45 °C, a storage temperature of -20 to 60 °C and a relative humidity of 45 to 75%.

Cold is the limit a trip reaches first. A morning on the slopes, a night camping at altitude or a station platform in winter can drop below freezing, outside the stated operating range. An inside pocket, close to the body, keeps the mod nearer that range than a bag left outdoors.

Heat raises a different issue, storage. A car parked in the sun or a beach towel in the middle of the afternoon are the situations where the 60 °C ceiling is worth keeping in mind, all the more so as the cells stay inside the mod.

Bottles cope badly with those peaks too, as our guide on how to store e-liquid at home and on the move explains. Mod and liquid belong in the shade, in the same bag.

As for humidity, a range of 45 to 75% suits plenty of destinations, but a tropical climate in the rainy season can sit above it for days. The IP68 rating and that humidity range describe two different things, and the spec sheet publishes both.

The Z tank, the fragile part of the kit

The Z Sub-Ohm tank fills from the top and takes a wide 810 drip tip, designed for direct-to-lung vaping. Geekvape carries it from one kit to the next, and nothing in its build is meant for rough use.

Its glass section is the part to protect first. The brand puts a spare glass in the box, and that is the piece to pack before anything else, rolled in a soft pouch, because a cracked glass leaves the tank unusable far from any vape shop.

A flight is a case of its own, since the change in cabin pressure can push liquid out of a full tank. Emptying the tank, or unscrewing it and storing it upright in a pouch, saves finding the mod covered in liquid on arrival. Our article on taking a vape on a plane covers what security expects from e-liquid bottles.

Getting the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 ready to fly

A dual-battery mod follows the same rules as any lithium-powered device in the cabin. Two features of this kit make preparation easier, a physical lock on the side and external cells that can be taken out.

The A-Lock switch against accidental firing

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidance on passengers’ lithium batteries limits e-cigarettes to carry-on baggage and asks passengers to prevent accidental activation.

On the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5, that job falls to the A-Lock slide switch, which Geekvape presents as protection against accidental firing. A slide switch can be checked at a glance or with a fingertip, without waking the screen or counting button presses.

The brand does not say whether the switch cuts power completely. For a long journey, removing the cells remains the cleanest precaution, provided each one then goes into its own case.

Two flat-top 18650 cells

The mod needs two 18650 cells with flat terminals at both ends, otherwise the battery door will not close, the maker points out. That detail matters when buying cells abroad, where a button-top model simply stops you using the kit.

Spare cells travel in the cabin, each in a case that covers its terminals. Our article on the Lost Vape Centaurus M200 on the move sets out the watt-hour calculation for an 18650 cell and the number of spares allowed.

FAQ

A few questions come up when planning a trip with this kit. The answers below add to the article rather than repeat it.

Which coils work with the Aegis Legend 5 kit?

Geekvape’s Z Series coils fit the Z tank. The kit includes two, a pre-installed Z 0.15 ohm XM rated for 70 to 85 W, and a Z 0.4 ohm XM rated for 50 to 60 W.

Does the mod take 21700 cells?

No. Geekvape designs the Aegis Legend 5 for two 18650 cells and lists no other format. A 21700 cell, longer and wider, will not fit in the battery bay.

Can I charge the mod during a flight?

No. Air transport rules ban charging e-cigarettes and their batteries on board. Charging happens on the ground, through the mod’s USB-C port or, with the cells taken out, on an external charger.

What is Eco mode for?

Geekvape presents it as a battery-saving mode. It is one of the five modes on the mod, and it makes sense when no socket is within reach during a journey.

Which e-liquid suits this kit?

The supplied coils are sub-ohm models meant for direct-to-lung vaping from 50 W upwards. They pair with e-liquids high in vegetable glycerine, which are thicker and generally sold for this style of vaping. In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of 10 ml at most.

Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 on the move, what to remember

On paper, the mod rests on published test figures, 30 minutes at 1.5 m under water and repeated drops, which makes it solid kit for hill walking as much as for public transport. That toughness does not extend to the whole kit.

Three precautions cover most of it. Pack the spare glass, keep the mod within the 0 to 45 °C range Geekvape states, and slide the A-Lock or take the cells out before the flight.

That leaves the destination itself, since vaping law changes from one border to the next, and it decides what the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 can do once you land.
